Podcasting? Of all the things your church could be doing, should you be thinking about adding podcasting? It might be something to consider.
I want to be honest, with the rise of mobile broadband and the popularity of video, I thought podcasting was on its way out or was at least going to be confined to a niche market. I was wrong. Podcasting is a growing market.
Check out some of these stats:
- 64% of the US population is familiar with the term “podcasting” – up from 60% in 2017 (Infinite Dial 18)
- 50% of all US homes are podcast fans (Nielsen, Aug 2017)
- 44% (124 million) of the US population has listened to a podcast – up from 40% in 2017 (Infinite Dial 18)
- 26% (73 million) listen to podcasts at least every month – up from 24% in 2017 (Infinite Dial 18)
- 17% (48 million) listen to podcasts weekly – up from 15% in 2017
- 16 million people in the US are “avid podcast fans” (Nielsen Q1 2018)
That’s all well and good but, why would a church bother to create a podcast?
1. You Already Have Content for a Podcast
I am not sure about your church, but the church I attend has a sermon every week. The pastor works all week to prepare a 15-30 minute message and then usually preaches it once, to less than half of the congregation. In today’s connected world, that is not very efficient. (I realize spreading the gospel isn’t just about efficiency, but bear with me.)
In fact, many pastors have a lot more content than that. Great preachers leave a whole lot of material back in their office in order to keep within their allotted time. Many pastors also have a treasure trove of other things they would love the chance to talk about.
And pastors aren’t the only ones in the church who have content. Sunday school teachers, student ministry leaders, children’s ministry directors, and others may have things they could share with a broader audience.
2. You Likely Already Have One Person Accustomed to Public Speaking.
It might take a preacher a little while to get used to speaking just to a microphone instead of speaking to a congregation, but most already have some aptitude for delivering a message.
3. There is Not Much of a Financial Investment
Podcasting has one of the lowest financial barriers to entry of any online media. Many churches will already have the needed equipment. If not, a computer, free software and a $50 microphone will get you started. There are even free platforms to host the podcast if the church isn’t ready to invest.
4. Podcasting Can Give You a Chance to Connect with Your Congregation in a Deeper Way
It is great to put sermons online, especially for those who can’t or don’t attend on Sunday. But what about the people that do? There is a decent chance that they already listen to podcasts. They might even listen to podcasts about religion, spirituality, or the Bible. Why not create another connection point where they can get that from their own church?
5. A Podcast Can Help You Reach More People in a New Way
Let’s face it, there is a big leap between thinking about God, and actually going to church. There are people out there that know something is missing in their life. They desire to connect or reconnect with God. However, they may not have found their way to a church. They might not be willing to show up on Sunday, but might be willing to listen to what you have to say.
6. Podcasting Will Increase Your Church’s Online Visibility
The most used search engine, Google, has already started including podcast results in searches on Android phones. This is great for helping people find your podcast, but with the way Google works, this also will likely mean that having a podcast will make it easier to discover your church website.
